Tasting Profile

From its release, 2001 has been one of my favorite vintages, one that exemplifies Hourglass at its best, defining balance with everything in its right place. The young vineyard, planted in 1993, really started to hit its stride in 2001. Aided by almost ideal growing conditions and Bob Foley’s deft touch, the consistent thread of aromatics through all Hourglass vintages—black licorice, mint, eucalyptus, earth and coffee/toffee—are all present and beautifully balanced. Additionally, ‘01 is now exhibiting the bottle aging aromatics of tobacco, cedar, and saddle leather consistent with earlier vintages. These nuances continue onto the palate and are integrated with tangy red and deeper black fruit, currant, fig, chocolate, crème-de-cassis, and a very faint hint of savory rosemary. There is a great mid-palate texture and weight, and tannins are firm yet sweet. Lively acidity provides a racy vibrancy, balancing red fruit against the darker fruit flavors, keeping the wine light on its feet while possessing a restrained power. It possesses a medium to long finish with no cloying alcohol. Decant one to two hours for full aromatics and texture.

Cellaring Potential

If there is an Hourglass vintage that will define the vineyard’s aging potential, 2001 is it. This wine shows young with a vibrancy and a deep purple hue. The purity of fruit expression is amazing and it has the structural weave, density, and acidity to age for quite some time; ten to fifteen years is well within its range. Complex and at a crossroad of young and aged elements, it’s a pleasure to drink now, but we are very excited to see its evolution over the next 10+ years.
