Tasting Profile

Since 2005, we’ve noticed the Hourglass vineyard has achieved an optimal balancing point. The canopies evened out and the fruit matured in unison through our three different blocks.This was a 12 year evolution of roots burrowing through the site’s fractured bedrock, the intense rock slowing the process and making the vines struggle for water and resources in the earlier years. Since 2005, Hourglass has achieved remarkable consistency and the 2008 vintage is no different. Earth, black licorice, pomegranate, cassis, and mint interweave with tar, toasted espresso, pound cake, and brioche to elicit a dark haunting aromatic. Bright natural acidity, a hallmark of Hourglass, provides structure and lift with tangy red currant and sour cherry to balance the darker cassis fruit flavors. Seamless integration from start to finish is a function of polished ripe tannin, delivering a silky texture and lingering finish.

Cellaring Potential

The 2008 has shown particularly well in recent tastings, with great balance and nuanced subtleties, leading us to think it will age with the grace of vintages like 2001 and 2005. Though very enjoyable now, we believe it will continue to add layers of complexity over the next 10+ years.
