Tasting Profile
The 2008 Hourglass Blueline Estate Merlot is explosive and dense. Surprisingly, it has greater texture and weight than most Cabernets, ours included, yet it benefits from the brighter essences of Merlot to make this dark beauty sing. Its unique intensity is a product of mineral rich, nutrient poor soils, rendering a wine of deep concentration and vibrant, lifted aromatics. Toasted espresso and caramel notes accentuate aromas of flinty mineral and Mandarin orange zest, leading to an bounding, heady aromatic. The red sour cherry and tangy dried cranberry flavors typically associated with Hourglass Merlot give way to darker black fruits (cassis and blackberry) and mingle with caramelized spun sugar on the palate. Silky tannins and bright acidity provide the structure that frames the deep ripe flavors, leading to a beautifully layered and lingering finish. 2008 is an extraordinary vintage that will turn the heads of those who think Merlot lacks substance or intrigue.
