Current Vintage Overview

2013 is the second year of the current drought cycle in California. In the past, drought conditions could spell trouble, but the learned experience of past farming practices, combined with the precision viticulture developed in the 2000’s, has enabled us to train the vines to be extremely drought tolerant. More importantly, better understanding of water delivery at precise times, has enabled us to better manage phenolic development in our grapes, leading to better flavors, aromas and overall structure.

2013 was a very dry, warm vintage but the abnormally cool nights (critical for a great vintage) allowed for the development of phenolic compounds and acids at levels our winemaker Tony Biagi had never seen in 20 vintages. By the end of harvest, it had become apparent to Tony this was one of the greatest vintage for ideal grape chemistry he had ever seen…

Tasting Notes

The 2013 HG III has all the hallmarks of the ‘13 vintage. Explosive aromas of fresh vibrant fruit, black and bing cherry, blackberries and pomegranate, mingle with an elevated roasted hazel nut and toasted vanilla bean aromatic to create a compelling beckon call. Layers of fruit, crossing a spectrum of red and black berries, and the unmistakable hint of dark chocolate, yield a richness that is also bright in pure fruit character. The firm tannins of Cabernet provide enough structure, but the mouthfeel driven by Merlot is decidedly lush and seductive. The blend finishes strong with expansive and lingering notes. By design, this wine delivers at the pull of the cork. Enjoy!
