Tasting Notes
2002 Vintage  -  550 cases made.  Last tasted 12-13-05.  Recent tasting generally confrim last year's note, but the wine seems a little less showy and more linear than when released (it may be "napping" a little right now) - The '02 vintage is further confirmation of a consistent personality that is a function of the vineyard's terrior and Bob Foley's incredible skill as a winemaker.  Elegance, balance and structure define '02 as is consistent with past vintages, yet this wine gains a little more fruit concentration.  Aromatics again play a critical role with an intoxicating mix of black licorice, mint and eucalyptus playing against coffee/toffee and a clean earthiness.  The mid-palate retains a full bodied suppleness, with dark fruit concentration and slighly greater texture than '01.  Alcohol is relatively high, but is in balance with no "hot" edges.  Firm tannin and good acidity provide a solid frame for the saturated dark fruit.  The finish is long with some grip from the tannins  -  a good sign for ageability.  As we consistently recommend, decanting is critical to release aromatics and influence texture.  We have found a breaking point at around 6 hours for the wine and you could decant much longer if desired.

Aging Potential  -  As '02 is "sleeping" a bit right now, and is so young, we recommend holding for several years.  If you just can't help yourself, make sure to decant for 6+ hours.
