Tasting Notes
2001 Vintage  -  800 cases made.  Last tasted 01-17-06.  Recent tastings confirm last year's notes, but demonstrated nice signs of bottle aging  -  The 2001 vintage defines balance with everything in its right place.  The young vineyard (planted in '93) really started to hit its stride in 2001, aided by almost ideal growing conditions and Bob Foley's deft touch (he had a few vintages under his belt at this stage, and this experience really  helped  dial Hourglass into its sweet spot).  The consistent thread of aromatics through all Hourglass vintages including black licorice, mint, eucalyptus, earth and coffee/toffee, are all present and beautifully balanced.  Additionally, '01 is now exhibiting bottle aging aromatics of cedar/tobacco.  These nuances continue onto the palate and are integrated with dark fruit, blackberry, fig, chocolate, and crème-de-cassis.  Tannins are soft and sweet.  Great mid -palate texture and weight, though this wine is not a "fruit bomb."  Lively acidity provides a feminine touch of balance to the dark fruit flavors keeping the wine light on its feet.  Medium to long finish with no cloying alcohol.   Decant 4 - 6 hours for full aromatics and texture.

Aging Potential - Balance is key, which should deliver great aging potential over the next several years.  Currently not as developed as the fabulous 1998 vintage, or as initially showy as the critic favorite2002, but we believe 2001 may yet come to define this vineyard.   Though it is drinking well now, we recommend holding over the next few years.
