- 600 cases made. Last tasted 02-07-06. Recent tasting notes are similar to last year's. In the three previous vintages the bulk of the fruit was contracted to Duckhorn. The 2000 vintage was the first year Hourglass gained access to all its fruit. The profile of the wine changed slightly as the reach of the eucalyptus trees does not cover the entire vineyard. As a result, the effect of eucalyptus became a smaller component of the blend. While still present, the eucalyptus is now slightly subdued and balanced against more aromas of black licorice, earth, white pepper, and coffee/toffee. Again, on the palate, eucalyptus plays more of a supporting role against crème-de-cassis, fig, and dark fruit flavors. The texture is soft with a long finish, but this vintage has slightly elevated tannins. While the tannins created some grip when the wine was bottled, they are now mellowing and becoming more integrated. Decant 4 hours for full aromatics and texture.
Aging Potential - Tannins provide a nice aging component, and this vintage has not yet fully gained the benefits of bottle age. We recommend holding this wine for the next several years.
