- 130 cases made. Last tasted 01-07-06. Last year we had written that the '99 Hourglass was like many '99 vintage wines - linear, higher acid, harder tannins, texturally and aromatically less expressive, but potentially longer lived. This year 1999 decided to reveal itself. After several hours of decanting it really showed its true character unveiling a heady blend of toasty vanilla, coffee and eucalyptus, mixed with some cedar/cigar box aromas in the nose. For the first time this wine took on many of the characteristics of the fabulous 1998, with a softening of its tannins. Bright fruit flavors of blackberry, plum, crème-de-cassis, earth and pomegranate seem more abundant now. It still possesses good acidty and tannic structure, but has gained textural complexity over previous tastings. Nice lengthy finish. Decant 4 - 6 hours.
Aging Potential - Though this wine is now revealing itself in an engaging way, we think it has plenty of potential to improve over the next few years.
