Reviews

2002 Vintage - 98 Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:  "...the magestic 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses the same characteristics as the 2001, just more of them.  Boasting more perfume, a bigger attack and mid-palate as well as a greater length and intensity, this beautiful Cabernet reveals notes of camphor intermixed with black currents, cherries, licorice, cedar, and minerals.  Full-bodied and opulent with a structured finish, it is accessible now because of its wealth of fruit and concentration, but it should easily evolve for 15 or more years."

2001 Vintage  -  No Point Score  -  Lettie Teague, Food & Wine Magazine:  "Winemaker Bob Foley, known for his work at Pride Mountain, is the talent behind this dense, and beautifully textured Napa Valley Cabernet."

2001  -  97 Points  -  Tasting Panel,  Adams Beverage Group:  "A magnificent effort by Bob Foley; must decant to open this wine's silky, elegant rich and ripe dark chocolate and dark cherry."

2001  -  95 Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:  " In recent tastings, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon preformed even better than my lofty review in December 2003.  An extraordinary wine made by Pride Mountain's Bob Foley, it exhibits smokey, toasty oak scents intermixed with black currant liqueur, licorice, and a touch of cedar.  The fragrant bouquet is followed by a full-bodied red with magnificent concentration, stunning purity, and admirable length. This stunning Cabernet should hit its peak in 3 - 4 years, and last for 15 - 20."

2001  -  94 Points  -  Steve Heimhoff  -  Wine Enthusiast:  "The 2001 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon is a sensation.  It's a perfect expression of the vintage, lush and harmonious."

2001  -  91 Points  -  Steven Tanzer, International Wine Cellar:  "Good full medium ruby.  High-pitched aromas of violet, mint and bitter chocolate, with a hint of eucalyptus.  Fat and sweet on entry, then quite lively in the middle, with distinctly rocky flavors of blackberry, shoe polish, and black licorice, plus a whiff of fennel.  From vines planted in 1992, on a southeast facing knoll rich in boulders and shale; the fruit used to be sold to Duckhorn.  Strong on personality.  (The 2002 version, with its superripe aromas of cassis, graphite and spice cake and its liqueur-like concentration of fruit, should be at least as successful as the 2001.)

2000 Vintage  -  95 Points  -  Jeff Morgan, Wine Enthusiast:  "This is gorgeous.  Smooth, rich, ripe, and loaded with complex flavors.  Black cherry, blackberry, plum, cloves, coffee, spice, chocolate, licorice, anise, menthol and eucalyptus all weave a kaleidoscope of taste for a tantalizing, heady and satisfying wine.  Velvety tannins frame it all, leaving it long and lush at the end.  Just when you think it is over, a new wave of plum, chocolate, toast and vanilla tease the palate for an even longer finish."

2000 Vintage  -  90 Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:  "The highly talented Bob Foley is the winemaker at Hourglass.  A strong effort for the vintage, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals aromas of sweet crème-de-cassis intermixed with notions of creosote and earth.  Made in a full-bodied, ripe, accessible style, it will provide delicious drinking over the next 8 - 10 years.

1999 Vintage  -  92+ Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:  "This wine is fashioned by Pride Mountain's winemaker, Bob Foley. The 1999 is a knock-out example. An opaque purple color accompanies gorgeous aromas of crème-de-cassis intertwined with graphite and sweet French oak. It is full-bodied and well-delineated, with beautiful purity as well as a remarkably long, textured, persistent finish.  It is an outstanding effort from this up and coming newcomer. Anticipated maturity: now - 2020.

1998 Vintage  -  94 Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:   "Contrary to vintage expectations, the 1998 is even better (than the 1997).  Notes of blackberries, cassis, flowers, and subtle French oak jump from the glass of this opaque purple colored wine.  Possessing more length, richness, and completeness than the 1997 (as hard as that is to believe), it is deep, full bodied, and sumptuous.  Low acidity, ripe tannin and a wealth of fruit suggest drinking it over the next 15 years.  Incredible!"

1997 Vintage  -  95 Points  -  Jeff Morgan, Wine Enthusiast:  "This first release may be poised to become the next ultra-cult Cab from Napa Valley.  Grown on four acres atop Mt. Veeder (SIC - the vineyard is actually at the Lodi Lane crossing two miles north of St. Helena), the wine shows rich black cherry, cassis, chocolate, tar, and herb flavors couched in classy, toasty oak with superb integration.  Searingly long on the finish."

1997 Vintage  -  91 Points  -  Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate:   "….impressive effort from Hourglass, a new vineyard situated next to Vineyard 29 (SIC  -  we are near, but not next to V29) on Route 29, Napa's route du vin.  The debut 1997 boasts superb crème-de-cassis aromas, pure, rich, full-bodied flavors, melted tannin, and a savory, expressive finish with subtle new oak.  Already drinkable, it will age nicely for a dozen or more years."
