In 2013, we decided to complete our portfolio with a white wine. Our mandate at the outset was to produce a white counterpart to our red wines, a wine about which you would say, "This is exactly what I expect from an Hourglass white wine."
Winemaker Tony Biagi and assistant Justin Carr brought with them considerable experience with Sauvignon Blanc, a white varietal perfectly suited to the Napa Valley. And so we followed their experience in an attempt to craft a truly unique Sauvignon Blanc.
We procured the rights to a beautiful vineyard on the same alluvial fan as our Blueline Estate vineyard, with those magical gravel wash soils. The tiny block is planted to two Sauvignon Blanc clones - Sauvignon Blanc #1 and Musque. Tony and Justin picked each clone separately and went about making three fermentations of each - in stainless steel, seasoned oak barrels, and new oak barrels - for a total of six wines with distinctly different personalities. The stainless fermentations produced wines with brisk acidity (think Granny Smith apples) and clear wet stone minerality. The wood fermentations produced varying degrees of richness and creamy mouthfeel, with ripe Honeydew melon flavors and aromas.
There is a distinct fork in the Sauvignon Blanc road. Cooler climates tend to render more herbal and grassy notes with green fruits, while warmer climates deliver more stone fruit and ripe melon characteristics. Between the two clonal selections and six fermentations, we were presented the full range of these characteristics. Once fermentation was complete, the six wines were aged for six months and blended to create that tension and balance between crisp refreshing vibrancy, creamy textural lushness and rich mid-palate density - exactly what we strive for in our red wines.
We could not have envisioned a more perfect Sauvignon Blanc. The wine delivers compelling honeydew aromas punctuated with Granny Smith apple notes. On the palate, the creamy textures from the French oak are brought to life with zesty citrus overtones and a pronounced slate minerality. Nuanced and dramatic, the wine captures the best of both worlds.
